Unison Holds National Conference on Disabilities

“Problems Concerning the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Armenia and their Possible Solutions” - such was the topic of a national conference that Unison NGO held in Marriott-Armenia hotel in Yerevan on October 21 within the framework of an Open Society Institutions - Armenia funded project. Officials from state agencies and regional administrations, as well as representatives of international organizations and NGOs working in all 10 marzes (administrative regions) of Armenia participated in the event.

Promoting the Right to Free Movement

On September 23, Unison NGO held an open-air photo exhibition. The event was aimed at promoting the right to free movement for persons with limited mobility. This right is fixed in the national legislation and follows from Armenia’s obligations to fulfill the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The exhibition was organized within the framework of Barrier-Free Movement: the Right for All project supported by the Counterpart Armenia and USAID. The State Employment Agency of Armenia had also assisted Unison.

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities are Still Violated

On August 17, Unison NGO held a press conference in Urbat Club. Issues concerning facts of violation of disabled persons' rights that still occur in Armenia, became the topic of the meeting with journalists.
Armen Alaverdyan, Unison NGO Executive director, and Gayane Khachatryan, member of the RA Chamber of Advocates, spoke at the briefing. In particular, they presented problems, which have emerged regarding definition of disability group for those who have functional impairments, and their further medical-social examination.
There are a number of cases when person's real disability group is not assessed correctly because of various reasons. In this connection, a case of Gagik Navasardyan, resident of Sevan city, was mentioned.

Paros Chamber Choir Performs at a Concert with Yale Alumni Chorus

In summer of 2010, Neeta Helms, President and the owner of Classical Movements/Blue Heart Tours (www.classicalmovements.com) contacted Armen Alaverdyan, Executive Director of Unison NGO and Managing Director of the Paros Chamber Choir. They met at the Unison office. Neeta Helms informed Mr. Alaverdyan that Classical Movements were planning to organize a concert of the Yale Alumni Chorus (YAC) in Yerevan late in June 2011. Helms and Alaverdyan discussed possible ways of cooperation and support from YAC to Unison/Paros.
